Mission Del Lago Municipal Golf Course
Course Categories:* All Courses *, ** - (2 Star Rated), $ All Courses $, $$ - ($0 to $30)
Mission Del Lago is a links style course with very few trees and wide open fairways that run along next to each other. The course is 7,004 yards long and has 5 tee boxes to challenge different skill levels. The course is kept in “playable” condition. Nothing about the course conditions is noteworthy other than the City either needs to invest in the course or let it go. I have seen the greens in decent condition a couple of times, but outside of that, they are usually bordering on “furry”.
The pro shop and snack area are adequate, meaning that you can get balls and a cap. If your hungry / thirsty you can get some beer / soda and basic food stuffs to fill your needs. The staff is nice and helpful.
The practice facilities are below average for even a municipal course. The putting green is almost always much slower than the what the greens on the course are (that means its shag) and the driving range is small, short and the turf is barely adequate.
I have only played the course about 6 times in my 7 years in San Antonio and I can’t think of a reason to go back. The layout is uninspiring and the course conditions are not good. The 2 things it has going for it are: The price it’s one of the cheapest 18 hole courses in town and if you leave on the deep south side it could be convenient. But really what can one expect from $33 weekend rate golf.

My handicap floats right around 3-6. I play in most local amateur events. I have caddied for local pros at professional tournaments. My family, friends and most my acquaintances play golf, when it's raining we watch golf, this is what we do :)

I don’t care for the course. As a member of the Alamo Trail City Golf Trail, I’m awarded two free plays there with my membership – I haven’t used either one of them since mid-2010.
Billed as a course with links heritage, I wanted to like it, but I couldn’t – it was a mess.
While I saw many employees on the course, it appeared to have suffered from neglect for years. In no kind of order, I noticed broken sprinkler mains gushing, dead spots on greens and fairways, unwatered areas, heaved and broken cart paths, too much hard, bare ground, and closed rest rooms. Also, while great for the homeowners who managed to build right along 9 (I think?), I could hear normal talking inside the house from the tee box. That’s just too close.
On the back nine, the course wound its way through ranching country and could have been an improvement, except for a couple of things. My ball lodged in a cow flop on the 12th fairway. The cows had also been on the green – putting a line across hundreds of hoofprints is challenging. Oh, and there was no water in the ball washer on 13 – remember the ball in the cow pie from 12? Also, I could wish maintenance had been a little quicker to pick up the two aromatic corpses of skunks chopped by the mowers.
The tee boxes had permanent stands for course maps. They must have been old and not updated, however, as the yardage differed by as much as 40 yards from the scorecard.
On the plus side, the course did have old-fashioned course maps with marked yardage. I liked the broad fairways. I liked the fact they awarded me an unasked-for greens fee discount because of the two-week-old top dressing of the greens.
In general, though, there’s no reason to travel more than a mile or so to get to this course yet – maybe later.

One of the better city courses in SA. Good layout and pace of play. Good golf for the money. Fairways were pretty dry, but good considering the green fees.

One of the best layouts in San Antonio, but the buildings and the course are not as well maintained as they should be. This course could be a real star.

This is a nice municipal course. It’s not overly difficult, but it is challenging. Due to recent rains, the course was in good condition, except for a few places that could have been better maintained. Also, the extreme slow play should have been controlled by the officials. Overall, not a bad course.
