Olmos Basin is a city owned and operated course. The city is currently in the process of making improvements to all their courses. Some getting more attention than others. We do not yet know how extensive the improvements to Olmos will be, but a lot needs to be done. We do know that they are trying to fix the drainage issues the course has. They didn’t name it Olmos BASIN for nothing, the course sits in just about the lowest land around town. The course has been flooded numerous times over the years.
Olmos Basin is a 6,870 yard layout (from the tips) with a slope rating of 71.0. They have 4 sets of tees to challenge varying skill levels. The course is very flat and tends to be moist. The trees that line the fairways are mostly very old meaning that there is ample room under them to play from, if you should find your tee shots going astray. The rough is not penal, so feel free to bomb away from the tee box. There are hazards on the course from ponds to creeks that meander across the fairways. The greens are mostly flat with some undulations near the edges, which makes for a bowl effect, that would funnel your approach shots towards the pins if the greens were fast enough. The greens usually sit somewhere between 6-8 on the stimpmeter. The course has never been kept in very good condition, it sits about in the middle of the pack, as far as city courses go. Having said that it is definitely playable and fairly cheap.
The practice facilities are limited a putting green that has some collar space for come light chipping. The green does represent what you will see as far as condition and speed once you get out on the course.
The pro shop will supply you with the basics you might need for your day out on the course. The grill is very reasonably priced and the food is pretty good.
The juniors in town play here often and they seem to have a following that play regularly. We play Olmos very sparingly, mainly because of the conditions. There is nothing really wrong with the course and I actually like the layout, but the green speeds and general course conditions keep me away, there are plenty of alternatives for $10 more that don’t leave me wishing I had spent the day somewhere else.

I am the creator, owner and lead reviewer for Golf San Antonio.Net. I play in San Antonio and around the world year round. I split my time between family, work and golf. My handicap floats right around 3-6. I play in most local amateur events. I have caddied for local pros at professional tournaments. My family, friends and most my acquaintances play golf, when it's raining we watch golf, this is what we do :) Have you played this course before?? I don’t much care for Olmos Basin. The fairways are lined with what appears to be 100,000 basically identical live oak trees that make finding a ball off the fairway almost impossible. It can also be maddening to have a ball land just a few feet off the green and not be able to find it — the lush grass just closes up over the ball. There are better alternatives for the same money.

I play here atleast 10 times a year. In the last 6 months I have noticed a decline in the facilities. The fairways have big patches of grass that you can loose your tee shot in. The greens have a scap on them that does not let you have a smooth putt. The tee boxes are so hard you can’t even stick a tee in it. The price of golf has gone up and the quality of the golf course down.
