Olympia Hills Golf Course

Olympia Hills is a Finger, Dye, Spann Design Group Layout. The 18-hole layout is owned and managed by the City of Universal City, Texas, making its debut in February of 2000. Located about 17 miles from downtown San Antonio, on the North East side of town. The course features dramatic elevation changes on holes 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, and 13, dropping 50 feet or more from tee to green. The South Texas PGA has recently re-rated Olympia Hills Golf and Conference Center.

The golf course features Bermuda grass and four sets of tees measuring 6,923 from the championship to 5,534 from the forward. The layout boasts naturally undulating topography, man-made mounds and strategic placement of bunkers, as well as native South Texas vegetation and wildlife that can be seen throughout. The fairways are tight and require a good tee shot and often from something other than a driver. The STPGA re-rated the course recently and in my opinion got it much closer to what it deserves. This course will eat your lunch if your having a bad day off the tee, on most holes there is just no where to miss and heaven forbid there be 20mph winds. You will definitely not be spraying the driver all over and expect to shoot a good number. The greens are typically in good condition and usually rolling about 7-8 on the STIMP meter. I have seen them at about 10 and they were very quick, there are no table top greens at Olympia, they are all rather undulating.

The practice area at Olympia is pretty good for a public, city run golf course. (albeit Universal City) It includes a full length driving range with sculpted target greens and a 10,000 square foot short game area and includes a putting green, chipping area and sand bunker. They have a second practice green up by the clubhouse. The practice greens are representative of how the greens on the course will play that day.

The pro shop is smallish but has what you need for your outing. The restaurant / bar is appointed well and the kitchen serves up some pretty good food. The staff have always been cordial and professional. We have spent a lot of time at Olympia and have never even heard of anyone saying anything bad about the staff, great people.

Olympia Hills Golf Course is one of our top picks for affordability coupled with decent to good conditions. We are of the mindset that no matter how cheap a course is, if the place is a cow pasture with a flag, then we will not be patronizing the facility.  Olympia is always a challenge and doesn’t hurt your pocketbook either.

This is a course that requires the ability to hit it straight or manuver the ball on the opening nine. The second nine starts to open up so you can breath. If you are a new golfer either stay away or bring a dozen balls (you may find some on the way). It is a course that rewards the good shots and penalizes the wayward shot on the front nine. The back nine opens up but still requires solidly struck shots to keep you from venturing in the undergrowth. All in all a great course to test your game.‎

Talk about a course that provides some challenge! Course requires some really tough shots and is designed very well. #8 could be one of the toughest holes in the city. Lots of rolling hills and elevation changes. Some water on the back, but not too much. Great practice facility. If you enjoy a challenging course, this is it. Plus, Universal City residents recieve a discount.

Front nine is the best. Lots of elevation changes. Keep it in the fairway though, or your ball is gone. Back nine is a little boring. Everytime I play this course there are a few greens in bad shape. Overall, a good course for the money. Good twilight specials.
