The course is always kept in “decent” condition. The dreaded decent
designation. I have seen the fairways in above average condition wise, but most of the time they are merely average. The greens are usually in good condition and are kept rolling at about 10 on the Stimp meter. 10 is a great number for a public golf course. Alot of the greens are sloped back to front and that is a good thing. On the ones that are not slopped in this way, one would have a tough time keeping a mid to long iron on the green. They are fast but they are also pretty hard. The course has several holes that you should not swing for the fences on (i.e. 10, 13, 14) pretty much everything else is a green light for the driver. Expect to have some wind at La Loma as it is high on the terrain and there are not a ton of trees to block the breeze. The rough is basically non-existent. You are more likely to run in to dirt patches than to find your ball nestled down in the rough.
Fort Sam Houston Golf Club has one of the few “lighted” ranges in town. The downside of the range is that is matted. The size is ample, but just the idea of working on your game off of mats should scare anyone. The practice green is very large and could easily accommodate 20+ golfers. They keep the practice green in good condition and the speed is indicative of what is to be found on the course.
The course is run by the US Army MWR.

I am the creator, owner and lead reviewer for Golf San Antonio.Net. I play in San Antonio and around the world year round. I split my time between family, work and golf. My handicap floats right around 3-6. I play in most local amateur events. I have caddied for local pros at professional tournaments. My family, friends and most my acquaintances play golf, when it's raining we watch golf, this is what we do :)

This is my favorite course in San Antonio, and is a fine example of A.W. Tillinghast’s skills. It’s open enough that you can bring out the driver for most holes. The greens seem fair, but vary in speed from one to the next. Pace of play is its only real problem – you can see the greens easily, so you can also see the group in front of you either standing there discussing their scores or walking very, very slowly, with very small steps to their carts. It makes you wish for marshals, sometimes. Afternoons seem to play faster.

You’re going to be hard-pressed to find a better course for the money. Fairly open layout, although A.W. Tillinghast knew just where to place bunkers that would attract your ball. Historic- the only military course to host a PGA Tour event (Texas Open, twice), and Arnold Palmer won here.

Fun course at a great value. La Loma is the more open of the two courses that works well for both new and seasoned alike. The pace of play was good, and the course was in great shape. November is a great time of year for the south west!
