Riverside Municipal Golf Course

Riverside is 6,694 yards long and has 3 tee positions to choose from. The fairways are ample wide and their is little rough to speak of. The trees on the course line the fairways and kept errand shots from getting through. The course being as short as it is poses little deterrent from par for long hitters. The greens which during our visit were not over seeded (December) were running fairly quick at about 8-9 on the stimp. During the winter is is basically no reason not to swing for the fences on practically every tee. The trees are bare, combine that with no rough and the 6,600 yards seems a whole lot shorter.
On the upside the course is very economical and would be a great place to take the juniors or beginner golfers out. (even more so if walking) There is no range at Riverside but they have 2 putting greens and a small par 3 course. They also have the Laser Link system equipped in all carts. I wish more courses would implement this system, makes finding your distance to the flag extremely easy, just point and shoot.
So if your looking to spend the day outside and not spend a lot of money or want to take your non playing friends or kids out for the day to “see if they like golf” they may be the perfect place for such a en devour. But if your looking to test your skills and play on conditions worth your hard earned money then we suggest spending a bit more and visiting a course like The Republic or Pecan Valley, both located on the South side.

I am the creator, owner and lead reviewer for Golf San Antonio.Net. I play in San Antonio and around the world year round. I split my time between family, work and golf. My handicap floats right around 3-6. I play in most local amateur events. I have caddied for local pros at professional tournaments. My family, friends and most my acquaintances play golf, when it's raining we watch golf, this is what we do :) Have you played this course before?? Slow play is the norm for this course My partner and I made the mistake of being behind a “tournament”. That “tournament” was two groups of 5 old men who would not allow us (a two-some) to play through. They would plumb-bob nearly everything on the green. The marshall told them to speed it up but when he was out of sight, they took their time. The pro-shop just shook their head and agreed as to how rude the group was – but did nothing about it. The greens were bumpy – it was like watching a basketball game rather than putting. You may pay a cheap rate to play but nothing is worth the frustration of playing behind a bunch of old men who think they own the course!

I played and walked Riverside early this spring and discovered an absolutely beautiful golf course for the money. Riverside is a local municipal course that has been well maintained which I found surprising. Municipal golf courses are usually scraggly and poorly maintined because cities don’t usually spend the money they earn from the golf course on the golf course. Riverside had beautiful fairways meandering through and around large trees. The layout is not too difficult nor excessively long. The back tees are only 6694 yards which is abut the length I usually try to play. I think I paid about $22 for the senior walking rate. It’s worth more than that. You are provided with a nice card with maps of all the holes complete with yardages indicated to various targets on each hole.
The only negative I remember is that they apparently do not have a snack bar. They have plenty of room for a snack bar but for some reason they either don’t have one or I missed it. The course is located in a kind of scarey looking part of San Antonio but we had no problems and didn’t notice anything that really concerned us. It’s just not in the newer area of San Antonio.
They also have an extra nine hole course composed of par threes. I’m not certain about the nine-hole course since I didn’t play it but I did see several of the holes.
I plan on returning this weekend (labor day 2010) and play this beautiful golf course again. As a comparison, Brackenridge Park which was recently renovated increased its weekend green fees to the $75 range which includes a cart. I’ve played it once since the renovation and that seems to be the green fee I remember. You will enjoy Riverside.

good little muni in a crappy part of town.
This is a decent little course, and has a few challenging shots in it. The proshop is non-existent, but they do have a snack bar.
The location is the only real issue with Riverside, you may have a little butterflys if you don’t know exactly how to get here, because you don’t want to be lost in this neighborhood. But the course offers a good golf value.

Not the greatest part of town but not too bad. Decent course at an okay price. I had a lot of fun but it wasn’t the most challenging course.

The course in winter is like playing on a haystack. Summer and spring is awesome, San Antonio weather and the course plays well, in a rough neighborhood but well worth the value. Second half of the course is played on the newer side past the river, water in the river is crystal clear and the second half of the course is excellent. Try it and you love this course.
