Fair Oaks Country Club (BlackJack Oak)

Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club is a Private Golf Club located just North of San Antonio. About a 35 minute drive from downtown, it is fairly accessible to all. Fair Oaks has 2 golf courses Live Oak and Blackjack Oaks. We will be looking at Blackjack Oak today. Blackjack Oak was originally designed by Gary Player and Denis Griffith. The course is restricted to members and their guests. The course gets plenty of play and is kept in good condition. The members keep the two courses fairly full during the weekends.

Blackjack Oak is the 2nd course that Fair Oaks has to offer it’s members. Blackjack Oak is a 7000 yard course from the tips and has 4 sets of tee boxes for different skill levels to choose from. Unlike Live Oak (Fair Oaks other course) Blackjack Oak has been over seeded for the winter. The tee boxes, fairways and greens are all a deep green. The course has a rather unique layout in that just about half the holes are a traditional layout and half the holes are links style. We played the course on a day that the wind was blowing about 10-15 mph, once we reached the links style stretch of holes it practically doubled. We were adding 3 clubs on several holes. They have a couple rather difficult holes. The 3rd hole, a par 3 221 yards according to the card, my laser showed 255 to the pin and into the wind. There is also #18 a par 4 basically straight up a hill. (see the photo down below). It is more visually intimidating than anything else. There are 2 or 3 forced layups off the tee (at least from the tips). The greens on the day we visited were running rather slow (in comparison to their normal speed), we surmised that they may have had a frost delay in the morning and were unable to cut. The greens at Fair Oaks typically run about 10 in the Stimp meter.

The practice facilities at Fair Oaks are pretty good for San Antonio. Definitely not the best in town but far far from the worst. There is a driving range that can accommodate approximately 40 players. The range is sufficiently long and there are several targets within the hitting area. The downside to their range is that it is typically mats only in the winter, there is not a lot of room down the range for the growing cycle. Their mats are not too bad, but not as good as you can find at San Antonio Country Club or Dominion. There is a smallish short game practice area (with bunker) that you can work on your chipping and sand play. Their are several practice greens that are kept in very good condition. The main one is quite large and and is kept in the same condition as the greens on the course. The speed is reflective of what you will find on the course.

The pro shop is rather small but it is well stocked. The restaurant and bar is decent and the service is good. Don’t plan on paying cash for anything as you need to be with a member to avail yourself of its amenities.

If you get invited out to play, take advantage as you will enjoy the clean putting surfaces and the unique layout.

I am the creator, owner and lead reviewer for Golf San Antonio.Net. I play in San Antonio and around the world year round. I split my time between family, work and golf. My handicap floats right around 3-6. I play in most local amateur events. I have caddied for local pros at professional tournaments. My family, friends and most my acquaintances play golf, when it's raining we watch golf, this is what we do :)
