(Updated) Alsatian Golf Club

Alsatian Golf Club, located about 30 miles West of San Antonio, in Castroville just off of highway 90. Just after it seems that you have gone through Castroville keep an eye out on the right for a hotel and at the bottom of the hill an intersection that will allow you to veer to the right. As you are “veering” you will see a small sign for Alsatian Golf Club. (THE SIGN NEEDS TO BE BIGGER!)

Alsatian Golf Club was recently acquired by Southern Golf Properties. SGP also runs Riverhill (see our review) and The Golf Club of Texas (review coming soon).

The course not long by any stretch of the imagination. Topping out at 6,436 yards from the tips and bottoming out at 4,872 yards from the ladies. You’ll definitely find yourself leaving the driver in the bag on more than a few holes. There are several holes that having some local knowledge would be extremely helpful. A couple times we had to drive down into the fairway to figure out not only where to place our tee shot but which club to use. A course map on the card would be extremely helpful. (but alas every space on the card is filled by advertisements)

The conditions at the course were pretty good. We visited in the winter and the fairways had not been over seeded and were prone to producing a mud ball or two. The greens again were not over seeded but were in top notch conditions. There were running about 12 on the STIMP meter and were still soft enough to hold a mid-iron. The greens were definitely the standout feature at the course.

The practice facilities at Alsatian were decent and allowed for a good warm up on a cold day. The driving range is big enough for about 25 people to be hitting at once. The practice green was indicative of the playing conditions on the course.

Update (11/20/2011)

Were back again with a course update for Alsatian. Everything from the original review stands as is. The course was in very similar conditions and the Greens were still in good condition as stated above.

We did eat at the facility this time, and the food was good. Don’t hesitate to grab some lunch / dinner when your out to play.

The Alsatian is a nice course on the west side of Castroville. There is some slight relief to some of the holes which makes the course fun to play. This is a bargain course to play. Usually in good shape but the price is right. Old style clubhouse. Also, call ahead as they sometimes have a play and lunch special.
