The course is the same layout the most in town have always enjoyed. Coming in at 7,022 yards from the tips with 4 sets of tee boxes, everyone in the group will be able to find a distance that compliments their skill level. The fairways are a bit bare in some spots but as we stated above the course is rebounding from deaths brink. The greens which were also not over seeded are actually running pretty smooth and at a good speed. (somewhere around 9 on the Stimp.) The waste areas that the course is known for need some work but are not that bad. The management has adjusted their rates ( I assume in response to the current conditions)
In the past the restaurant has had good food at reasonable prices. I have not yet (under the new management) been a patron. Will make sure to visit it on our next trip out. The pro shop has always been nice and continues to be so. They have a good selection of products.
The practice facilities have never been top notch at the course and are somewhat degraded now. The practice green is in good condition and is indicative of the conditions on the course. The driving rang on the other hand is in horrid condition. Without the over seeding there is nothing growing on the range and being hit off daily the turf is not surviving. We found it difficult to find grass to hit off of. The range balls are another sensitive topic for me at GCOT. They have always in the past been a bit stingy with the quantity of balls for the price. This stays the same today, but in addition, in the several bags that we had of balls, I counted at least 20 cut / cracked range balls, not to mention 5-10 that had been hit by mowers. I am sure that Southern Golf Properties has these things on their hit list. I know that Bryan Gathright (one of the principals of Southern Golf Properties and a Top 100 teacher) would probably not approve to the current practice facilities let alone be giving any lessons their personally as it stands today.
We hope that the new personnel that Southern Golf Properties has brought in can bring the course the rest of the way back. We look forward to it getting back to the 4 star level we are accustomed to.
We will definitely be visiting the course again as spring approaches and will update this review accordingly.
Update (11/19/2011)
Well its been 11 months since our last visit out to Golf Club of Texas and were back to give a update on the conditions of the course. From what we can see NOTHING has changed in the past year give or take. If anything conditions have gotten slightly worse, although the greens remain in pretty good condition. When we were there the greens had been sanded but were running very smooth.
We did eat in the restaurant during this trip out (tournament food was provided) and the BBQ that was served was pretty good (although a little sweet for my taste) but good none the less. The dinning facility is definitely showing age and needs to be painted badly.
From what we saw on our latest trip out, we would still not pick GCOT for our own play when there are courses for the same or less money closer to town with MUCH better playing conditions.

I am the creator, owner and lead reviewer for Golf San Antonio.Net. I play in San Antonio and around the world year round. I split my time between family, work and golf. My handicap floats right around 3-6. I play in most local amateur events. I have caddied for local pros at professional tournaments. My family, friends and most my acquaintances play golf, when it's raining we watch golf, this is what we do :)

This course has a ton of potential. When I first played there in 2005 it was in really good shape. Today, however, I’m saddened by the state of the course. There are several bunkers that have been labeled ground under repair for years now. I’m convinced that with the right dedication this layout could easily rival some of the mid-price range courses in San Antonio.
The clubhouse facility looks great and the staff are all pleasant. The real estate that the course sits on is great! You’ll love the forced water carry on the par 3 third hole and the required strategy to keep tee shots the fairway (there are plenty of areas where you cannot find a stray ball).

The Golf Club of Texas likes to boast that it was rated 4 out of 5 stars by Golf Digest. But keep in mind, that was in 2007. A lot can change in 3 years and has! Liked…not usually crowded; some challening holes; they fixed most of the sand traps which were in really bad shape. The drink cart staff and dining staff are very friendly. There are different levels of membership to fit any budget. The Lonestar program is a very good deal. Disliked…used for high school matches/practice a lot during the week; no starter or marshals on the course; people do not repair ballmarks on greens; pro-shop service is not very friendly; they don’t pair people up even on weekends-they just give everyone a cart…which means they are out of carts by 2pm pretty frequently; you cannot see the green from the fairway on #9 so you have no idea where the flag is…cutting down the trees around the pond would solve this; they allow 5-somes and even 6-somes on the course (remember, there’s no marshal); they removed the GPS carts and it takes a search party to find a yardage marker; the waste areas need to be cleaned up and maintained better b/c of overgrown grass, clumpy landscape, etc. Despite the fact that the membership is very reasonably priced and the course is only 10 minutes from my house, I let my membership expire due to all of the cons listed. I really hope that they can make major changes because it could be a top notch course (as it apparently once was).
